To outline how the UCSF School of Medicine focuses recruitment and retention activities to align with UCSF’s missions and values. 

Overview

The UCSF School of Medicine, in collaboration with UCSF Campus partners, is committed to recruiting and retaining persons from all backgrounds in medicine.

Principles

  1. The UCSF School of Medicine, recognizes that a mission-appropriate physician workforce is imperative to addressing the health care needs of the state of California and the broader community. This commitment includes working to eliminate health care disparities and to support our academic missions of discovery and education. 
  2. As a member of the University of California, UCSF School of Medicine endorses and follows the UC Regents Policy 4400 Policy, and complies with Proposition 209

  3. UCSF School of Medicine recognizes the importance of a workforce that reflects the diversity of California’s population. We seek to recruit and retain a medical school class whose identities and perspectives reflect the communities we serve. 
  4. UCSF School of Medicine is committed to creating an equitable and inclusive learning, discovery, and patient care environment. We will actively monitor and address equity concerns in educational and clinical settings to support all learners and members of the health care workforce. 

Policy

  1. The School of Medicine Committee on Curriculum and Educational Policy (CCEP) will evaluate the effectiveness of the School’s outreach, candidate recruitment, retention and pathway programs every two years using aggregate data.  
  2. The Office of Medical Education will annually report on Medical Student and Resident matriculation to the CCEP and to the Dean of the School of Medicine. 
  3. The School of Medicine CCEP will evaluate the campus climate, learning environment, and academic outcomes for students from varied backgrounds whenever the campus conducts a climate survey. 
  4. The School of Medicine will collaborate with campus partners to develop and implement initiatives and surveys to improve inclusive excellence.
