Teaching Awards Celebrate Faculty for Advancing Medical Education at UCSF
Our faculty shape and teach the next generation of compassionate physicians at UCSF.

UCSF teaching faculty who exemplify these values in teaching and patient care were honored at the School of Medicine’s Teaching Awards Ceremony October 16. Over 100 medical students, faculty, residents, and staff gathered at the Parnassus Campus to recognize the visionary work and leadership of talented faculty educators.
The awards ceremony gave recognition and gratitude to the tremendous range of expert faculty who provide quality teaching, leadership, mentorship, and professionalism everyday for UCSF learners, in a variety of teaching settings across the Bay Area:
- The Maxine Papadakis Awards for Faculty Professionalism and Respect, was presented to faculty who advance UCSF's values around professionalism in medical education. These faculty members exemplify the treatment of students and all others in the clinical environment with professionalism, courtesy, and respect. The Maxine Papadakis Awards were presented to faculty in departments that participate in a core third-year or major fourth-year clerkship. The selection committee comprises faculty, residents, and, medical students.
- The Bridges Curriculum Foundations 1 and 2 Teaching Awards highlighted the impact of faculty and learners in delivering excellence in small-group instruction, coaching interactions, and lectures. These awards are based on nominations from first- and second-year medical students recognizing outstanding instructors who have demonstrated excellence in teaching during the F1 and F2 phases of the Bridges Curriculum.
- Other faculty were honored at the Teaching Awards Ceremony for excellence in teaching, and received Henry J. Kaiser Awards in recognition for outstanding work teaching in classrooms, inpatient care settings, and ambulatory care clinics; Special Recognition Teaching Awards and the Charlotte Baer Memorial Award recognized Volunteer Clinical Professors (VCP) who have made contributions through excellence in teaching and who enrich the ability of our students to learn. Laurence F. Yee, MD, this year's Charlotte Baer Memorial Award recipient, spoke to the humanistic behavior, culture of learning, and strong mentorship that helped shape him throughout his medical career and continues to inspire his work with students.
- Continuous learning was celebrated with the recognition of faculty graduates of UCSF's Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education, an international collaboration between UCSF and the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht). Well regarded medical education researchers from both institutions serve as mentors. To date the program has seven PhD graduates with almost 50 research products, either published or submitted, created in less than a decade. Other recognition for faculty included the the Pathways Mentor of the Year and Teach for UCSF Certificate Program.
The evening concluded with a special recognition for Michelle L. Li, MD, outgoing Chair of the Volunteer Clinical Professors (VCP) Advisory Board. Dr. Li was Chair of the Board from 2016 to 2019 and is a volunteer assistant clinical professor in Surgery, teaching residents. Dr. Li was a trailblazer in her role as Chair of the Board, and brought forward initiatives that benefit our VCP. Dr. Li will continue to serve as a member of the Board and was thanked for her extraordinary dedication to our learners, and continued contributions to the School of Medicine at UCSF.
Collectively, the Teaching Awards celebrate these talented medical educators at UCSF who are transforming medical education to reflect real-world patient needs, and advancing science to support improved patient care.

Charlotte Baer Memorial Award
The Charlotte Baer Memorial Award is presented annually to a volunteer clinical professor of the School of Medicine in recognition of distinguished service. This award is named in honor of Dr. Charlotte Baer, who was a practicing internist in San Francisco and a volunteer clinical professor for almost 30 years. Dr. Baer was an outstanding clinician with exceptional humanistic qualities who served as a role model and teacher to hundreds of our students and residents.

Henry J. Kaiser Awards for Excellence in Teaching
The Henry J. Kaiser Awards for Excellence in Teaching were established in 1969 with funds provided by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. They bestow significant academic distinction, as well as a small monetary award for the recipients. Faculty members who teach medical students or residents are eligible for nomination, and only medical students and residents can make nominations. This year we celebrate the recipients of the Kaiser awards in 4 categories, including the award recipient from Fresno Medical Education Program.

Pathways Mentor of the Year Award – Acknowledgement
The Pathways Mentor of the Year Award was presented to the winner earlier this year, during the 2019 Spring Inquiry Symposium. This award honors the mentor’s commitment and dedication to nurture leaders, innovators, advocates, and researchers at UCSF. A strong mentor is the key to a successful and satisfying legacy experience. The Candidate for the Pathways Mentor of the Year Award was nominated by their mentees, and the winner is selected by the Pathways to Inquiry Board of Directors.

Teach for UCSF Certificate Program – Acknowledgement
Teach for UCSF is a program of the Center for Faculty Educators that creates defined educational paths based on specific sets of free workshops, ranging from 16 to 39 hours of instruction per certificate, plus individual assessments during each workshop. Individuals develop focused teaching skills in any of seven tracks. The program is popular with faculty, residents, fellows, and volunteer professors at UCSF and at affiliated institutions. We have over 850 enrollees.
Special Recognition for 2019 Doctoral Graduates
In 2010, UCSF joined in collaboration with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This international collaboration made possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. Successful candidates graduate with a PhD in Health Professions Education from UMC Utrecht. Well regarded medical education researchers from both institutions serve as mentors. To date the program has seven PhD graduates with almost 50 research products, either published or submitted, created in less than a decade.
