About CASE
The Center for Advancing Scholarship in Education (CASE) integrates mentoring, training, and advanced degree programs to enhance the impact of health professions education and improve patient care.
Vision
CASE strives to advance education science and theory while translating education science into practice and policy at local, national, and global levels. This vision includes driving forward education scholarship, scholarship training, and capacity building to contribute to the broader scientific dialogue. By promoting the application of education evidence into practice, innovation, and systemic change, CASE contributes to enhancing the health and well-being of communities and populations.
Education Scholarship
Education scholarship involves use of knowledge to improve teaching and learning. It includes:
- Discovering new knowledge through original research.
- Studying effective education practices to support learning and growth, such as scholarly evaluation of innovations.
- Connecting ideas across areas, fields, disciplines, and domains to deepen our understanding of education.
- Applying existing knowledge to advance practice through translation and implementation.
CASE Leadership Team
Arianne Teherani, PhD
Senior Director, CASE
Professor of Medicine
Dr. Teherani provides strategic direction and vision for CASE, overseeing all programs and partnerships. She will continue to serve as Director of Program Evaluation and Education, Continuous Quality Improvement for the School of Medicine and as the Founding Co-Director of the UC Center for Climate Health and Equity.
Bridget O'Brien, PhD
Director, Education Research, CASE
Professor of Medicine
Dr. O'Brien leads the direction for CASE’s education research programs. She also co-leads the UCSF-UMC Utrecht Health Professions Education PhD program and the VA Advanced Fellowship in Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research, and co-directs the Teaching Scholars Program. She also remains a key member of the Department of Medicine's Program for Clinician Educator Success (PRO-cess) team.
Christy Boscardin, PhD
Core Faculty, CASE
Professor of Medicine and Anesthesia
Dr. Boscardin leads the joint Master's in Education program with UC Berkeley in CASE. She is a core faculty in the UCSF-UMC Utrecht Health Professions Education PhD program and the Teaching Scholars Program. She will continue as the School of Medicine’s Director of AI and Assessment for Medical Education and direct Medical Education Scholarship for the Department of Anesthesia.
Tracy B. Fulton, PhD
Core Faculty, CASE
Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics
Dr. Fulton co-directs the Teaching Scholars Program in CASE. She will continue to serve as Co-Director for the Renal, Endocrine, GI, and Nutrition (REGN) Block in the Bridges Curriculum.
Jason Luong
Quantitative Research Assistant
Jason builds analytics tools in Python and R to transform complex assessment and performance data into actionable insights, reports, and tools that support health professions education research.
Sally Collins
Qualitative Research Analyst
Sally advances health professions education scholarship as a qualitative research analyst, providing consultative support in literature review, data collection and management, qualitative analysis, and scholarly writing for faculty and learners.
