Alli Gomez-Ojeda, a fourth-year UCSF medical student enrolled in the San Joaquin Valley PRIME program, was recently honored with the UC President’s Award for Outstanding Student Leadership for her efforts in advancing anti-oppression, diversity, and equity in medical education and patient care at UCSF’s San Francisco and Fresno campuses. Her leadership has driven meaningful changes to the Bridges Curriculum and enhanced the experience of LGBTQ+ students.

Spring Inquiry Symposium: Class of 2024 Advances Knowledge Through Scientific Scholarship

On May 16, 2024, 127 fourth-year UCSF medical students showcased their Deep Explore and year-long research projects through oral and poster presentations during the spring Inquiry Symposium at Millberry Union on the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus. An array of student research topics were on display, ranging from clinical to basic science and medical education.

Karen Hauer, MD, PhD, UCSF School of Medicine Vice Dean for Education, was recently recognized for her significant contributions to the field of medical education research and assessment by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), a national nonprofit that develops and manages the national licensing examinations for medical students and trainees.

Insightful Inquiry from the Class of 2023: Reflections on this Year’s Inquiry Symposium

One of the core tenets of the UCSF School of Medicine’s Bridges Curriculum is the pursuit of knowledge through inquiry. To support this, the school has fostered a medical education curriculum rich with opportunity for scientific exploration. As a component of the final Career Launch phase of the Bridges Curriculum, students are provided 12-20 weeks of protected time to complete a mentored “Deep Explore” project with their choice of principal investigator, in their field of study. Some students will go beyond 20 weeks and pursue a funded research gap year through UCSF or outside
Second-Year Students Honored with Dean's Prize in Short-Term Research
Each year, UCSF medical students in the Inquiry Curriculum participate in over 200 mentored research projects ranging from eight weeks of summer research to full-time, yearlong projects. In 2022, the Inquiry Funding Office awarded over 100 Summer Explore grants to first-year students to engage in mentored research with UCSF faculty between their first and second years. After months of work, students presented the initial results of their research projects in mid-November at the Summer Explore poster sessions.

Karly Hampshire, a fourth-year UCSF medical student, was one of two University of California students recently honored with the UC President’s Award for Outstanding Student Leadership. Hampshire received the award in recognition of her work co-founding and co-directing the Planetary Health Report Card (PHRC), a metric-based tool for evaluating and inspiring planetary health content in heath professional schools.

Announced today, UCSF medical student Sheantel Reihl was awarded a Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, a highly competitive graduate school fellowship for immigrants and children of immigrants.
Reihl, who emigrated from Trinidad & Tobago with her family at age 13, is a first-generation college graduate and a 2nd -year medical student at UCSF. Having experienced the challenges of navigating the U.S. healthcare system as both an undocumented immigrant and a teen mother without insurance or financial resources, she is passionate about addressing health disparities and equity.

UCSF Student Shannon Chan (Class of 2019) received the Best Poster Prize at WGEA 2019 this past March for the poster titled, "Understanding the Role of Residents as Teachers within Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship Program." Working with Patricia O'Sullivan, EdD in the CFE, and Leslie Sheu, MD, from the Department of Medicine, Chan's research looked at the role of residents as teachers in longitudinal clerkships. Peter Chin-Hong, MD, Wins Best Oral Presentation Award at WGEA 2019
Academy of Medical Educators member Peter Chin-Hong, MD, was awarded the prize for Best Oral Presentation in the Category of Research on March 26, 2019, at the recently concluded WGEA meeting in Reno, NV.
