Announcing Adnan Alseidi, MD, EdM, as Associate Dean for Assessment, Improvement, and Accreditation
The UCSF School of Medicine recently announced the appointment of Adnan Alseidi, MD, EdM, as Associate Dean for Assessment, Improvement, and Accreditation at the UCSF School of Medicine, effective January 1, 2025.
Dr. Alseidi is currently the Vice Chair for Education and Professor of Clinical Surgery in the UCSF School of Medicine Department of Surgery. Over the past five years, he has led significant advancements in undergraduate and graduate medical education, simulation and skills training, surgical education research, and faculty development within the department.
Dr. Alseidi’s extensive leadership experience includes serving as past president of the Association for Surgical Education (ASE), where he applied his expertise in educational theory, accreditation, psychomotor training, cognitive assessment, and educational policy. These skills will be invaluable in his new role.
He brings deep knowledge of competency-based medical education and student assessment, honed through prior roles as simulation director, program director, and associate program director at institutions including the United States Navy, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.
At Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Dr. Alseidi has been a champion for health equity, improving cancer care for uninsured and unhoused patients. In 2023, as president of the Fellowship Council, he mandated diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across more than 200 surgical fellowships, ensuring training in these principles.
Dr. Alseidi’s dedication to health equity has led him to work to increase cancer care capacity and quality in underserved nations. In recognition of his efforts to establish surgical oncology fellowship programs in Brazil, Chile, Ethiopia, and Mexico—graduating their first fellows within the past three years—he received the Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Foundation 2024 Gazi Zibari Global Outreach Humanitarian Award.
Among his many honors, Dr. Alseidi was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators (2018) and the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators (2022). He has also received numerous teaching awards, including the Virginia Mason Medical Center Joel Wilson Baker Teacher of the Year Award (2015) and the UCSF Department of Surgery’s 2024 Lim-Thomas Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring Annual Award.
