Health Systems Leadership

The Health Systems Leadership (HSL) Pathway is a collaboration with the Department of Medicine and open to other UCSF GME trainees. It provides physician-trainees with knowledge, skills and mentorship in preparation for leadership careers in healthcare systems improvement and healthcare policy. HSL welcomes participation by residents and fellows with prior experience and/or interest in healthcare administration, organizational management, systems or quality improvement, patient safety, and health policy.

Core Elements of the Pathway

Two Year Longitudinal Curriculum
  • 2-week long "seminars" annually including Friday morning half-day sessions while on elective/outpatient rotations
  • Learners are expected to participate and contribute throughout the two years of the curriculum in a quality improvement or healthcare policy group project
  • Sessions are focused on personal development of leadership skills, core knowledge in quality and safety improvement, and current healthcare policy, and novel frameworks for individual inquiry

The Health Systems and Leadership Pathway is concluding the track's healthcare policy project for 2024 and is gearing to select the quality improvement project  for 2025.

Speaker Series

The goal of these sessions is to introduce residents to a wide range of physician career trajectories: entrepreneurship, healthcare policy, program building and administration, medication education and philanthropy leadership; and facilitating introduction to potential future mentors.

Yearly Group Project

This challenging and intensive group project focuses on addressing current quality or policy concerns for important clients such as UCSF Medical Center, SFGH, SF Department of Public Health, Blue Cross Foundation of CA.

Group Legacy Project

Some examples of previous works include publication in a peer-reviewed journal, abstract/poster presentation at a regional or national meeting, conference talk, online module, educational reference tool, position paper/op-ed piece, or creation of a new organization.
