The Office of Graduate Medical Education assists program administrators with finance matters related to UCSF trainees. In addition to facilitating health insurance recharge, OGME also runs several programs to aid program administrators with trainee reimbursement.
Health Insurance Recharge
Residents and fellows enroll in insurance plans by working with their program administrators. The GME finance unit manages the monthly recharge process. Each month (typically before the 3rd Friday of the month), program administrators will submit an excel health insurance template to GME finance to process the recharge.
Please reach out to your department's finance team for any prior month's health insurance charges that require adjustments.
License and USMLE Reimbursement Program
Residents and fellows in ACGME, Non-ACGME and ABMS programs pay out of pocket their USMLE Step III, new license, and renewal fees during their current appointment year. The fees may be eligible for reimbursement by their departments. When departments reimburse trainees for the fees, departments will then submit a quarterly funds transfer request form to GME finance through UCSF Box for reimbursement for ACGME and ABMS programs only. Non-ACGME programs are not reimbursed by GME Please refer to License Reimbursement resources.
Needs-Based Relocation Reimbursement Program
New incoming GME trainees may be eligible for relocation reimbursement of up to $1,800. Eligibility will be determined through verification of program and PGY through MedHub and proof of eligible expenses. For further information please review relocation resources in the following BOX link.
The current year Relocation Summary can be found in the following BOX link.
Meal Card Program
Residents and fellows assigned to a rotation at UCSF will receive $300 a month. If the rotation is at one more site in addition to UCSF, the meal money will be appropriately pro-rated by the program administrator (i.e. for a rotation that is 50% time at ZSFG and 50% at UCSF, the resident will receive $150 in UCSF meal money and the appropriate amount of ZSFG meal money). Rotations and resident/fellow numbers at UCSF will be collected from the program administrators by OGME prior to the start of each academic year in May.
The Blumberg Loan is an interest-free loan that was established through the Office of Graduate Medical Education (OGME) to financially assist UCSF residents and clinical fellows. Residents and clinical fellows may request a loan from two months prior to the start date through five months prior to the current appointment end date. The loan may be in the amount of $1,200, $2,400, or $3,600. For all loans, including those requested prior to starting date, the GME contract must be completed and signed, and both MedHub and OLPPS entry must be completed. Direct Deposit must be set up with Payroll.
The UCSF GME salary scale applies to all residents, fellows, and non-MD trainees appointed through the Office of GME. It includes salaries by year in the program and the housing allowance.
