UCSF Faculty Author Article on Educational Strategies for Clinical Supervision of Artificial Intelligence Use in the New England Journal of Medicine

The New England Journal of Medicine recently published an article titled “Educational Strategies for Clinical Supervision of Artificial Intelligence Use.” Co-authored by Christy Boscardin, PhD, UCSF Professor of Medicine and the Director of Artificial Intelligence and Assessment for Medical Education, the article shares the new skills and mindsets that both trainees and educators will need to employ in the AI-enabled clinical learning environment. Acknowledging that many learners will have more experience with artificial intelligence, educators will need to embrace shared learning. Educators will need to teach and model critical thinking, a key skill in AI-assisted learning since it enables adaptive practice—shifting between efficiency and innovation.
UCSF Faculty Author Macy Foundation Innovation Report on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Education in Academic Medicine

Academic Medicine recently published a two-part innovation report commissioned by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation to inform the discussions at a conference on AI in medical education. The report authors include Christy Boscardin, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Director of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Assessment for Medical Education, and Brian Gin, MD, PhD, former Associate Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. Part one synthesizes the landscape of AI in medical education, underscoring its potential advantages and inherent challenges. Part two explores the perspectives of innovators actively integrating AI into medical education and examines their perspectives regarding the impacts, opportunities, challenges, and strategies for successful AI adoption and risk mitigation.
