Insightful Inquiry from the Class of 2023: Reflections on this Year’s Inquiry Symposium

UCSF School of Medicine 2023 Inquiry Symposium Panel Discussion
Panelists reflect on student research, mentorship and the future of medical inquiry during the UCSF School of Medicine Inquiry Symposium

One of the core tenets of the UCSF School of Medicine’s Bridges Curriculum is the pursuit of knowledge through inquiry. To support this, the school has fostered a medical education curriculum rich with opportunity for scientific exploration. As a component of the final Career Launch phase of the Bridges Curriculum, students are provided 12-20 weeks of protected time to complete a mentored “Deep Explore” project with their choice of principal investigator, in their field of study. Some students will go beyond 20 weeks and pursue a funded research gap year through UCSF or outside

Journeys, Representation, and Coming Home: Reflections from UCSF Match Day 2023

On a brisk Friday morning, the sound of envelopes ripping open and shouts of joy could be heard from Koret Quad on UCSF’s Mission Bay campus in San Francisco. Serendipitously falling on St. Patrick’s Day, this year’s Match Day celebrated 184 soon-to-be UCSF graduates, as they found out where they would be continuing their medical training journey in residency.

This year, two-thirds of students matched into residency programs in the state of California, with one-third of students matching at UCSF. A quarter matched into Internal Medicine; 37% matched into primary care specialties; and 30%

Personalized Mentorship and Growth: Reflecting on the First Four Years of SPAN (Specialty Practice Ambulatory sub-iNternship)

Originally launched in 2019 to complement in-patient focused clinical rotations, SPAN (Specialty Practice Ambulatory sub-iNternship) facilitates a greater understanding of ambulatory medicine among fourth-year medical students by pairing them with a physician preceptor to work alongside for 12 sessions over the course of 10 months. The goal of SPAN is to encourage students to explore medicine outside of the hospital, hone their clinical skills, grow in professional responsibility, and form a coaching and mentoring relationship with a preceptor, all to better prepare soon-to-be graduates for

UCSF Medical Students Celebrate First In-Person Match Day Since COVID Began

The excitement and emotions of the 2022 Match Day were heightened because the event at Koret Quad was the first time the entire class reconnected in-person since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. As students learned how and where they will spend the next 3-7 years for their residency, they reflected on their journeys in medical school and what they are looking to give back to their communities.

This year, 149 UCSF School of Medicine students matched into residency programs.

40 percent of the class, 59 students, were accepted to fields related to primary care, including internal

Lessons Learned from Humanizing the Remote Learning Environment

March marks two years since concern about a global pandemic raced around the world. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, learning had to suddenly transition to remote and virtual sessions. The School of Medicine migrated the Bridges Curriculum, including lectures, labs, and clinical learning experiences, to remote learning within six weeks. On the anniversary of the pivot to online learning, we reflect on the innovations that came from two years of working to humanize the remote learning experience and how the School of Medicine is leveraging the lessons learned to continue to improve
