Postponing Step1 if taking gap year
For F2 students planning to take a year off do you advise postponing Step 1 or Step 2 CK? How important is Step 1 for our residency application?
Answer
We strongly recommend that you take Step 1 prior to your gap year because you are closest to the information and best prepared to do well on Step 1. If you take a gap year now, it is likely that you will be applying for residency with students who receive a Pass/Fail. However, your Step 1 scores will still be reported because that is your official transcript from the NBME. At the time you apply for residency, it is likely that Step 2CK will be reviewed more frequently.
