School of Medicine Global Health Research Grant

Purpose
The SOM Global Health Research Grant funds certain expenses for students doing international health-related research or projects. This funding source is not intended for work toward a Master's thesis or language program.

Award
-Up to $3,000 per student
-Can be used for pre-approved travel related expenses in line with UC spending policies (e.g. flights, accommodation, visa, vaccinations, and program registration fees)
Requirements
  1. Must meet eligibility criteria.
    • UCSF SOM MS4 currently enrolled (not in MSTP)
    • Pursuing SOM approved research rotations of > 7 weeks at approved site
    • Student has not received this award in the past
  2. Work must be in one location.
  3. All student travel overseas for academic research or rotations must be approved by using the Away Rotation Planning Tool/Checklist. This checklist (and all it requires) must be completed and submitted prior to applying for funding. This includes the Student Emergency Packet and the approver-signed Student International Travel Approval forms which may take some time to complete.
  4. All students must review UCSF Travel Risk and Travel Resources policies. See this link for further details.

  5. Funding is available only for research in under-served settings in resource-limited countries, or on reservations belonging to the sovereign Tribal Nations of the United States.
  6. All research and clinical rotations abroad require meeting with the SOM Global Health Advisor ([email protected]).
  7. On their return, students are required to submit an abstract and poster, if this research is part of their requirements for graduation.
