The Heat, Equity, and Integrated Resilience in Schools (HEIRS) Fellowship

Purpose
The Heat, Equity, and Integrated Resilience in Schools (HEIRS) Fellowship provides funding for enrolled medical students, between their third and fourth year, who are taking a year to complete full-time research or scholarship. This year-long research opportunity is focused on pediatrics, equity, and climate change. The funding comes from a grant from the state of CA and is a collaboration across several UC campuses (UCSB, UCI, UCD, UCSF). The focus of the grant is on heat in schools--measuring the levels of heat, and helping schools prepare for and respond to heat waves. The research methodology includes heat measurement techniques, review of local and state policy on heat, and mixed quantitative and qualitative research. The funded student position would work the site PI (Dr. Naomi Bardach) at UCSF and collaborate with teams (including interdisciplinary graduate students) at other campuses. There will be paid travel for an in-person all-team meeting once during the year within CA.
