Autism Identification: Working with Parents on Misinformation about Vaccines, Incidence and Treatments

Planners expect learners to:
1. Review strategies for patient discussion on lack of evidence that MMR or other vaccines cause autism.
2. Examine the methodological limitations of interpreting CDC autism incidence data, including reported increases in autism prevalence overall, rising diagnoses among previously undiagnosed adults, and a reversal in co-occurrence with intellectual disability (ID).
3. Summarize the key “active ingredients” of effective autism intervention across ages and developmental levels and explain how response to intervention (RTI) should inform recommendations for behavioral, educational, and psychopharmacologic treatment.
