This year’s theme: “We Are the Medicine: Returning to What Truly Sustains Us,” invites us to reflect on healing, community, and the cultural and relational practices that strengthen well-being during challenging times. This annual event is hosted through the Cultural Psychiatry Area of Distinction and is collaboratively organized by Psychiatry Residents from UCSF and Kaiser Oakland, with additional co-sponsorship this year from the UCSF Vice Chair for Opportunity and Health Equity (Dr. Will Martinez) and the UCSF Endowed Chair for Psychiatry Medical Student Education (Dr. Kew Lee). We are honored to welcome an extraordinary group of speakers and presenters: Dr. Amber McZeal (Keynote Speaker) — writer, vocalist, sacred scholar, and artivist whose work integrates somatic practice and Afro-Indigenous spiritual traditions to address cultural trauma, foster transformation, and cultivate more humane social relationships. Jenée Johnson — Founder and Curator of The Right Within Experience and mindfulness leader whose pioneering work bridges trauma-informed practice, racial healing, and culturally rooted wellness practices. Dr. Javeed Sukhera — Chair of Psychiatry at the Institute of Living, Chief of Psychiatry at Hartford Hospital, Associate Chief Academic Officer at Hartford HealthCare, Founder of the Hartford Hospital's Center for Research on Racial Trauma and Community Healing, and internationally renowned psychiatrist. Kiazi Malonga — Congolese American musician, recording artist, and cultural educator dedicated to preserving and evolving Central African musical traditions, and whose work integrates community healing and intergenerational connection. The program will also feature poetry and musical performances by UCSF Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow, Dr. Oluwatosin (Tosin) Fancher and UCSF Psychiatry Resident, Dr. Mo Okobi. Refreshments will be served on the Pritzker Terrace following the main program. Please RSVP by April 22 so we can plan accordingly for attendance and refreshments. Join us for an interactive afternoon of movement, music, poetry, collective reflection, and community connection. Please feel free to share this invitation widely with your respective networks and listservs. We hope for a full and vibrant gathering. ALL ARE WELCOME.
