Dr. Talmadge E. King, Jr. (Welcome and Opening Remarks)
Dr. Talmadge E. King, Jr. has been dean of the UCSF School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs since July of 2015. He began his career at UCSF in 1997 as chief of Medical Services at Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. From 2006 to 2015, he served as chair of the UCSF Department of Medicine, the largest department in the school, with approximately 29 percent of the school's full-time faculty.
A physician-scientist, King’s research has focused on inflammatory and immunologic lung injury. He is best known for his pioneering work in the management of the interstitial pneumonias, a scarring process that often leads to death. His bibliography comprises more than 300 publications and he has co-edited eight books, including the acclaimed reference book, "Interstitial Lung Disease," now in its fifth edition.
King graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency at Emory University Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, Ga. and a pulmonary fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.
He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Association of American Physicians, American Clinical and Climatological Association and the Fleischner Society. He is a master of the American College of Physicians and fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He won the 2007 Trudeau Medal, the highest honor of the American Lung Association and American Thoracic Society.
Dr. Stephanie Kang (Opening Keynote Speaker)
Dr. Stephanie Kang brings extensive experience advancing health systems and policy change through U.S. federal, state, and local government service across diverse sociopolitical contexts. She currently serves as the inaugural Deputy Assistant Commissioner for Health Equity at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, where she leads statewide efforts to embed equity in policy, data, and governance. Previously, she directed the launch of Tennessee’s first Bureau of Health Equity in her hometown of Nashville, overseeing multi-million-dollar initiatives to strengthen public health infrastructure, workforce development, and community partnerships. Earlier in her career, Dr. Kang served as Health Policy Director for U.S House of Representatives Congressmember Pramila Jayapal, where she utilized inside-outside organizing strategies on a range of health policy issues, including universal health care reform and access to care for immigrant communities. Her professional background also includes nonprofit leadership, global health projects in Haiti and Kenya, and research at Harvard Medical School and Brigham & Women’s Hospital. She holds a Doctor of Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, an MS in Global Health from Northwestern University, and a BS in Neuroscience from Northeastern University.
Dr. Zarin Noor (Closing Keynote Speaker)
Zarin Noor MD, MPH is a pediatrician at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Primary Care clinic. Her experience as a refugee from Afghanistan led her to an educational and career path focused on caring for immigrant families. She is the Director of the International Clinic within the Primary Care clinic, which focuses on the medical care of immigrant and refugee pediatric patients. She is part of the founding team of the Center of Excellence in Immigrant Child Health and Wellbeing. This Center focuses on research, training, education, advocacy, and policy specific to the immigrant pediatric patients. Through her work with this Center and the UCSF Health and Human Rights Initiative, she helped start one of the first pediatric specific asylum clinics in the US. In addition to immigrant health, she is actively involved in resident education. She serves as an associate program director for the pediatric residency program in Oakland. Dr. Noor has worked in collaboration with her pediatric residents to develop a comprehensive immigrant health curriculum for the pediatric residents in her program.
Dr. Kenny Banh (Closing Keynote Speaker)
Raised in rural Pennsylvania from a refugee family who fled war torn Vietnam, Dr. Banh has worked his entire career in safety net medicine and physician education programs targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Dr. Banh attended University of Pennsylvania for college and Drexel University for medical school. He has been at UCSF Fresno since 2004 initially as an Emergency Medicine resident before joining faculty. Besides working as in Emergency Medicine, his main administrative roles include Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, Directing the UCSF Fresno’s Mobile Health and Learning (HeaL) clinic and serving as the current chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Regional Campuses.
