Sara Whetstone, MD, MHS
Dr. Whetstone is Assistant Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences and Associate Residency Program Director. She serves as the UCSF GYN clerkship site director, teaches core clinical didactics and in CODA, and precepts in PISCES. She teaches residents in didactics and as a continuity clinic attending. Dr. Whetstone has received the Exceptional Faculty Award in Medical Student Teaching and the Outstanding Resident Teaching Award every year since joining the faculty in 2013, and an award from the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She mentors and advises residents at every level, and is dedicated to supporting and guiding underrepresented in medicine (UIM) trainees. Dr. Whetstone envisioned and developed the EMPOWUR rotation (Educating, Mentoring, and Preparing OB/GYNs to care for Women in Under-Resourced communities), a structured didactic program and clinical experience around the care of underserved women. The program serves as a model with regards to diversity for other GME programs and was awarded funding through the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). As Dr. Meg Autry, Director of GME for the department, observed, “Dr. Whetstone is truly visionary in her ambition to produce a workforce that is intentionally trained to take care of the most-needy of our patients.”
