Kate Lupton, MD, FACP

Associate Clinical Professor, Medicine

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
Dr. Kate Lupton is a general internist based at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital. She is a primary care provider at the Richard Fine People's Clinic and attends on the inpatient medicine teaching service at ZSFG.

EDUCATIONAL PURSUITS
Dr. Lupton's educational interests include ambulatory and primary care education for medical students and residents, equity and inclusion in medical education, physician workforce diversity and the clinical care of underserved and vulnerable patients. She is a core preceptor for medicine residents with continuity clinic at ZSFG and serves as a Resident Advising and Development (RAD) coach with the medicine residency program. She is Director of SPAN (Specialty Practice Ambulatory Sub-Internship), a required longitudinal ambulatory capstone clerkship for 4th year UCSF medical students. Dr. Lupton is a member of the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators. She is a graduate of the Harvard Macy Program for Educators in the Health Professions and the UCSF Teaching Scholars Program. Nationally Dr. Lupton serves on the Education Committee for the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Lupton is working with the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators to develop and implement the Teach for UCSF Certificate in Teaching for Equity and Inclusion - a series of faculty development workshops to help medical educators incorporate principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in their teaching and medical education work. She is the Certificate Steward for this program.

Dr. Lupton is strongly committed to improving the climate for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging and to increasing physician workforce diversity. She has served on several Department and School of Medicine committees examining these issues at UCSF. She was selected as a 2016 John A. Watson Faculty Scholar and has used this opportunity to collaborate on the implementation of holistic review in intern selection for the UCSF internal medicine residency program.

Dr. Lupton is a Curricular Component Liaison with the Anti-Oppression Curriculum in the School of Medicine. She is a co-lead for EJE - Equity and Justice in Education Works in Progress. She is involved in medical education research in the areas of equity and inclusion in medical education and has worked with medical students, residents and fellows on scholarly projects related to equity in medical education.
