Anda Kuo, MD

Professor

I am a professor in the Department of Pediatrics who is passionate about leveraging the expertise we have at UCSF and in our community to make child health and wellness a reality for all children the Bay Area. To achieve this vision, I helped to establish the cross-bay UCSF Child Health Equity Institute..

I believe our unique health professions-focused campus has an opportunity to explicitly develop leaders who will transform health throughout the life-course of individuals and communities. I had the incredible opportunity to be the Founding Director of the UCSF Pediatric Leadership for the Underserved (PLUS) residency program (2004-15) and served as the Associate Director of Curriculum for the UCSF Pathways to Health and Society (2011-15).

Accordingly, my interests are in community health, collaborative leadership, and leadership development, particularly to improve the health of vulnerable populations. I am currently co-leading the School of Medicine's Culture of Leadership Initiative from which we have developed the Meeting Optimization Program to create a culture of using meetings as transformative rather than transactional events.

I am a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators (AME) and served as the Communication and Advocacy Champion until 2015. I continue to serve as an editor for the Center for Faculty Educators e-newsletter. In 2013 I received an Academy Chair in Pediatric Education to advance the educational initiatives of the Child Health Equity Collective. I welcome collaborations across the health professions and beyond.

From 2012-15, I served as a First Five Commissioner for San Francisco. I also serve as a consultant with the American Academy of Pediatrics in areas of community pediatrics and advocacy competencies for trainees. In 2015 I joined the Board of the 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic.

Some of the specific topics I have facilitated include: developing and articulating vision, negotiation, conflict management, empathic listening, time management, emotional intelligence, and personal leadership inventories. I am certified practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Clinically, I am grateful to see patients and teach medical students and residents at the County hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
