Palliative Medicine Summer Exploration Program for Underrepresented in Medicine Students

Purpose
The UCSF Division of Palliative Medicine (DPM) are very invested in mentoring and cultivating a diverse group of future palliative care physicians to best meet the needs of the patients we care for and to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine. As a division, we are very invested in mentoring and cultivating a diverse group of future palliative care physicians to best meet the needs of the patients we care for and to support diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine. The goals of this summer program are to offer an opportunity for broad exposure to the field of palliative medicine and facilitate mentored participation in meaningful scholarly work for professional development and to advance the field. We expect that each project will result in a poster submission and opportunity to work on a manuscript submission to a peer reviewed journal for publication.

The program also includes opportunities to spend time with the mentor and/or other DPM faculty and interdisciplinary team members in clinical settings and attend educational division events.

Participants can work with a faculty member to develop a new idea for a project, or can join ongoing projects, with examples of these including examining health care disparities in outpatient palliative care practices and providing support for family caregivers. Projects would be done with close faculty mentorship.
