UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Partners with Vitalant Research Institute and our Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study (REDS) Brazil collaborators for a four-part seminar series highlighting research from the Brazil sickle cell disea
Established through REDS-III and continued through REDS-IV-P, the Brazil SCD cohort is a prospective, longitudinal study designed to generate real-world evidence on the health and clinical outcomes of people living with SCD in Brazil, with a particular focus on transfusion practices and their impact on patient outcomes.
This seminar series will feature investigators and clinicians from the REDS Brazil collaboration presenting key findings from the cohort and ongoing work aimed at advancing our understanding of SCD and improving transfusion practices and patient care.
September 15, 2026, Shannon Kelly, MD, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. “Overview of SCD cohort and the main findings”
September 22, 2026, Mina Cintho Ozahata, PhD, University of São Paulo. “Phenotype/genotype association studies using the Brazil SCD cohort”
September 29, 2026, Brian Custer, PhD, MPH, Vitalant Research Institute. “Development of the precision transfusion medicine array and its use in RBC-IMPACT”
October 6, 2026, Carla Dinardo, MD, PhD, and Monike Oliveria, MSc, Fundação Pro-Sangue, São Paulo. “RHD sequencing, alloimmunization & matching studies”
We hope you join this exciting series and take the opportunity to learn from our REDS Brazil collaborators and engage in discussion around the future of SCD research.
