Creating Comics: A Hands-On Workshop with Constance Wu, MD
In honor of hosting the National Library of Medicine traveling exhibit, Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn on display at the Kalmanovitz Library, from February 3 to March 13, 2025, the Library is sponsoring a comic workshop led by UCSF Chief Medical Resident, Constance Wu, MD. Constance developed a following online from drawing comics while she was in medical school and residency. During the workshop, she will share how comics have helped her process the ups and downs of working in medicine and guide participants through a fun and low-stress drawing activity.
Comics and graphic novels are highly effective formats for sharing both patient and healthcare provider experiences. The Library encourages participants to gain inspiration from the traveling exhibit, as well as our graphic medicine collection before, during, and after the workshop.
We look forward to furthering the conversation around graphic medicine at UCSF through this FREE in-person hands-on event. ***Please note that a valid UCSF ID badge is required to attend this event.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
Some paper and drawing supplies will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own!
ABOUT CONSTANCE:
Constance was born and raised in Palo Alto, California and studied chemistry at Pomona College. After college, she studied biological science abroad at the University of Cambridge before attending Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, Constance studied in the Health Sciences and Technology (HST) program and took an additional gap year for research. She also took a portrait class at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
After medical school, Constance joined the internal medicine residency at UCSF and graduated in 2024. She is currently a chief resident and will be staying at UCSF for a hematology/oncology fellowship. Outside of her clinical work, Constance draws comics about her experiences in medicine and has self-published two children’s books (one on COVID, one on intern year as an inside joke). She also enjoyed hosting paint nights and other artistic events during her residency.
ACCESSIBILITY:
UCSF welcomes everyone, including people with disabilities to our events. To request a reasonable accommodation for this event, please contact Sarah McClung by emailing [email protected] as soon as possible.
