UCSF scientists and SFCM musicians will explore how variation can create both new possibilities and new vulnerabilities—from genetic mutations that shape evolution and disease to musical variations that transform a melody, inspire improvisation and drive music in new directions. Through short talks, musical demonstrations, conversation and live performance, the program will consider a shared question: How can unexpected change become a source of innovation?
