Professor of Clinical Medicine

Atif Qasim, M.D., MSCE is an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He is currently the echo core lab director and cardiology fellowship program director.

He earned his M.S./B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics at Yale University and earned his M.D. degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his medical internship, residency, chief residency, and cardiology fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as chief resident. During his cardiology fellowship, Dr. Qasim received advanced training in multimodality imaging and earned a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. He joined the University of California, San Francisco cardiology faculty in 2012.

Clinical Interests: Dr. Qasim’s clinical interests are in general cardiology and non-invasive cardiology, using multi-modality imaging to better understand the cardiac disease. In particular, this includes the use of transthoracic, stress, transesophageal, and three-dimensional echocardiography as well as cardiac CT and cardiac MRI for the diagnosis and management of valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and pericardial disease.

Research Interests: Dr. Qasim is head of the echocardiography core laboratory which uses echocardiography to evaluate novel cardiac therapies for the treatment of heart failure and valvular heart diseases. The lab has expertise in strain imaging and in echocardiography of novel therapies for valvular heart disease including the Mitraclip system and other transcatheter valve devices.

Education Interests: Dr. Qasim is the cardiology fellowship program director and teaches in medical school. He created a website related to echocardiography (www.echocardiographer.org) and has a strong interest in providing greater access to online medical educational materials for trainees and practitioners.
