Alexandra Brown, MD

HS Assoc Clinical Professor

Dr. Alexandra Brown, MD is a Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Endowed Professor and an Associate Professor of Neurology at UCSF. She received her undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at Brown University in Providence, RI and her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC. She completed her Neurology Residency and Clinical Neurophysiology-EMG fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Dr. Brown has been a Clinician-Educator in the UCSF Department of Neurology since 2015. She works in a variety of clinical settings including the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences where she sees patients in the UCSF Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Neurology Complex Diagnosis Clinic, as well as Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) where she serves as Medical Director of Outpatient Neurology (Neurology Clinic Director). She is passionate about health equity and works in her role as clinic director to ensure patient access. She directs an outpatient rotation, entitled "Care for the Underserved," for the UCSF Neurology Residency where she strives to promote equitable care by teaching an empathic and inclusive bedside manner as well as strategies for how to maximize patient engagement in neurological care. Her work in this area earned her the honor of being named the 2021 Kenneth M. Viste, Jr. MD “Patient Advocate of the Year” by the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Brown is heavily involved in medical education and serves as an Assistant Program Director for the UCSF Neurology Residency Program. Dr. Brown is a member of the UCSF Academy of Medical Educators and focuses academically on medical student and resident assessment. Combining her passions for both equity and assessment, she co-developed a faculty workshop for the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators covering the topic of "Equitable Assessment" in the Teach for UCSF program. She is a graduate of the Teaching Scholars Program 2018-2019, the UCSF-Coro Faculty Leadership Collaborative 2019-2020, and the 2021-2022 UC Women’s Initiative for Professional Development (UCWI) leadership program.
