To meet the changing health needs of San Francisco, the future hospital will increase our capacity to provide the world-class patient care that makes UCSF the top hospital in Northern California. For more than a century, UCSF Medical Center has been central to San Francisco’s health care system. Today, UCSF leads all San Francisco hospitals in providing complex care to patients. The new hospital will: Increase UCSF’s bed capacity for Acute Care and Intensive Care and expand the medical treatments and services available to patients. Promote interaction between clinicians, researchers, educators, and learners in an environment that fosters innovation and accelerates the process of translating laboratory science to patient care. Create an optimal healing environment that addresses social, psychological, spiritual, and behavioral components of health in one place. Be designed to be energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable and create public spaces that are inviting for the community. Construction of the NHPH is planned to begin in 2023 and be completed by the end of 2030. UCSF seeks to build a community hub for healthcare, wellness, and pioneering research. Initial Study of Environmental ImpactThe proposed NHPH is subject to review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). This project may have a significant effect on the environment and an Environmental Impact Report is required. For purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the University of California is lead agency. This determination is based upon the criteria of the State CEQA Guidelines, Sections 15063 (Initial Study), 15064 (Determining Significant Effect), and 15065 (Mandatory Findings of Significance), and for the reasons documented in the Initial Study for the project.The Initial Study is a preliminary assessment of the project as it relates to all environmental topics in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and identifies environmental topics for further study in the EIR. UCSF seeks your input on environmental topics to be studied further. A Notice of Preparation/Initial Study is available for a 30-day public review and comment period, which begins on July 28, 2021 and extends through August 27, 2021. It identifies the scope and content of the environmental information that will be included in the Draft Environmental Impact Report.
