HPE Grand Rounds with Brian Gin, MD, PhD
The Center for Advancing Scholarship in Education presents this Health Professions Education Grand Rounds on The Emergence and Universality of Trust: How Entrustment Bridges Supervision, Learning, and Human-AI Collaboration, presented by Brian Gin, MD, PhD.
Brian Gin, MD, PhD, is from the San Francisco Bay Area, where he previously served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). In this role, he was a Pediatric Clinician Educator and Associate Program Director for both the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship and the Pediatrics Core Clerkship.
Dr. Gin completed his MD in both Pediatrics Residency and Pediatric Hospital Medicine fellowship at UCSF. He also holds an MA in Education and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently pursuing a PhD in HPE through a joint program between Utrecht University and UCS.
Throughout his experience supervising trainees in the health professions, Dr. Gin developed an interest in understanding the trust necessary to balance safe patient care with the often-conflicting goals of trainee autonomy and experiential learning. As a trainee in research in Health Professions Education (HPE), he integrated traditional methodologies with machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, drawing from his background in computational work on protein evolution.
His current research centers on understanding the process of entrusting trainees with clinical responsibilities and developing AI methods to enhance research, learning, assessment, and clinical decision-making. Dr. Gin aims to "democratize" AI within HPE by developing open-source AI toolkits that equip users to collaborate freely in this emerging field. As AI begins to play more significant roles in HPE and clinical practice, he is also actively developing frameworks to guide the entrustment of AI itself.
About Health Professions Education Grand Rounds:
At these hour-long sessions, participants hear about recent research in health professions education. Presenters may include advanced learners studying in CFE’s master’s and doctoral programs, UCSF faculty who conduct education research, and invited speakers who contribute outside perspectives to advance the scholarly study of health professions education.
The Master's Program in Education is a collaboration between UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley School of Education. The program prepares individuals in the research methodologies needed to undertake research studies in health professions education. Students receive mentoring from faculty in the UC Berkeley, Berkeley School of Education and faculty in the UCSF Center for Faculty Educators.
UCSF collaborates with University Medical Center Utrecht (UMC Utrecht) to offer the Doctoral Program in Health Professions Education. This collaboration makes possible a rigorous program for scholarly advancement for medical education researchers. Successful candidates graduate with a PhD in Health Professions Education from UMC Utrecht.
