Volunteer Clinical Faculty

Volunteer Clnical Faculty are important partners in medical education at UCSF

Volunteer Clinical Faculty (VCF) are board-certified health care professionals who teach in various clinical settings, and play a significant role in advancing UCSF’s mission to transform health care. Being a VCF is a valuable way for physicians to engage on a part-time, non-salaried, voluntary basis in the areas of teaching, system-change research and clinical expertise.

The Center for Faculty Educators (CFE) supports VCF by providing:

Teaching Opportunities
There are different opportunities to engage VCF in teaching in undergraduate medical education at UCSF School of Medicine. If you are board certified and see patients at your clinical site, either in San Francisco or the surrounding Bay Area, or if you would like to teach in small groups at our Parnassus campus in San Francisco, the CFE will be able to provide details on programs available.

Faculty Learning and Networking Resources
The CFE offers teaching development programs at no charge. These are opportunities for faculty development, networking, and many with CME credit.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) Vouchers
VCF have access to courses and conferences, organized by the UCSF office of Continuing Medical Education (CME), and are eligible to attend one CME course/conference for free per year (subject to space availability).

In order to receive a voucher for the free offering, VCF must:

  • Hold a current faculty appointment
  • Have completed a minimum of 50 hours of teaching students or residents in the given year for UCSF School of Medicine
  • Complete an online survey

Distinguished Teaching Awards
The CFE-hosted annual ceremony for distinguished teaching awards, includes:

  • Charlotte Baer Memorial Award
  • Special Recognition in Teaching Awards
  • Essential Core Teaching Awards (ECTA)
  • Henry J. Kaiser Awards for Excellence in Teaching
