Vyvy Young, MD
Professor
VyVy Young, MD, is a Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology in the Division of Laryngology in the University of California, San Francisco Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Young is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Louisville. During her matriculation at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, she was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She trained in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery under Jeffrey M. Bumpous, MD at the University of Louisville. During her residency, she was the recipient of the Francis Lejeune, Sr. Resident Research Award from the Southern Section of the Triological Society.
Dr. Young then accomplished her fellowship in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at the University of Pittsburgh. She was previously on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh as an Associate Professor as well as the Associate Director of the Otolaryngology Residency Program and the Assistant Director of Otolaryngology Medical Student Education. She has a passion for and a focus upon education as part of her professional career interests.
Dr. Young has authored 76 original articles and 14 book chapters and has given presentations at countless regional, national, and international conferences. Her clinical practice covers all aspects of laryngology including disorders affecting voice, airway, and swallowing, although her current research efforts focus on gender-affirming voice care, airway stenosis, spasmodic dysphonia, vocal fold paralysis, and voice outcomes research. She also has particular interest in gender, diversity, quality improvement, and wellness issues in medicine.
She has had extensive leadership and involvement with a variety of national organizations including the American Laryngological Association (ALA), American Broncho-Esophagological Association (ABEA), American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and Triological Society. She has served as Chair of the Voice Committee, Chair of the Women in Otolaryngology Communications Committee, and a member and Laryngology Subgroup Leader for the Annual Meeting Program Committee for AAO-HNS. She has served the ALA on the program committee, Awards Committee, and Membership Committee. In the ABEA, she was previously chair of the Finance and Audit Committee as well as the Liaison Oversight Committee and is currently a member of the Development Committee. For the Triological Society, she serves on the Thesis and Membership Committees as well as the 2025 program committee. Most recently, she has joined the Triological Society's inaugural class of mentors-mentees in the national Elevate-ENT Program for otolaryngology-bound medical students. She is a Fellow of the American Laryngological Association and member of UCSF’s prestigious Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.
