Residency Applications and Match Timeline

This is a general timeline. Students applying to residency will be enrolled in an iROCKET course in May of the year they apply; this course will include dates and other information specific to that application cycle.


  • Select career advisor(s) and begin reviewing specialty choices and your competitiveness
  • Review post-match reports, and talk to the graduating class about their application experience
  • Submit your MSPE information by the assigned deadline
  • ERAS opens. UME issues tokens for registration to all students who plan to graduate the following Spring. 
  • Begin to solicit letters of recommendation


  • ERAS orientation session
  • Work with all advising resources to develop final career plans
  • Work closely with your career advisor to develop an initial list of programs
  • Ophthalmology applicants register with SF Match
  • Urology applicants register with the AUA residency match


  • Draft your personal statement and review it with your career advisor and/or advisory college mentor
  • Applicants to transitional or preliminary programs should begin to work with a medicine or surgery career advisor


  • September 6: Students can begin to transmit applications to programs through ERAS
  • ​September 15: First day programs can start receiving applications. Target date for certifying and transmitting ERAS application.
  • September 15: NRMP opens for registration


  • October 1: ERAS releases MSPEs to programs
  • Begin to schedule program interviews, typically for November, December, and early January


  • UCSF SOM deadlines to take USMLE Step 2 CS and CK


  • Urology and ophthalmology applicants work with advisors to prepare a rank order list


  • Early January: Urology and ophthalmology applicants submit rank lists
  • Mid- to late-January: Urology and ophthalmology match results available
  • Work with advisors to prepare rank order list


  • Mid-February: Certify NRMP rank order list


  • Third Friday in March: NRMP match results available (Match Day)
