Steps to Effective Course and Curriculum Development

Davis, PhD, MD and Madhavi Dandu, MD, MPH Do you need to develop a module (online or not), series of classes, course, instructional unit, or program? Have you been developing curricula for many years? Learn to do it the right way. This workshop introduces faculty of all levels to a practical, theoretically sound approach to developing curriculum. During the workshop, participants will work through a six-step process, taking time in small groups to practice the skills learned with expert guidance nearby: Identify a problem or need to be solved Examine the particular needs of your learners Develop goals and measurable learning objectives Choose educational strategies that best fit your material Devise steps for implementation Consider evaluation and feedback At the end of this workshop participants will be able to: Describe Kern'€™s 6-step process for curriculum development Discuss the importance of conducting a needs assessment in curriculum development Write SMART-er learning objectives Discuss the importance of matching objectives to learning strategies Set personal goals for applying the skills learned in this workshop to one's own practice setting, and review a tool designed to assess performance of new teaching skills.
