“Two Competing Views of the Meaning of Equality in the United States Constitution and International Human Rights: 150 Years of Struggle”

Objectives:
An overview of how the US Supreme Court has viewed the meaning of the 14th Amendment's guarantee of equality under law since the Amendment's adoption;
How does the US interpretation conflict with modern human rights perspectives?
What are the implications of the Supreme Court's decisions for the struggle for racial and gender equality since Brown v. Board of Education?
What are the effects of these decisions on racial inequities in areas such as health, education, criminal justice?
