This workshop is the second of two workshops that introduce the learner to qualitative methods in medical education. This session will briefly review the assumptions of qualitative research approaches, common qualitative methods, and evaluation of qualitative research. The primary focus of the session will be on qualitative data analysis.

During this session, participants will divide into groups for interactive exercises, providing opportunities to practice:

  • Designing a study using qualitative methods.
  • Using qualitative methods to analyze data.
  • Critically examining and reviewing qualitative research.

At the end of this session, participants should be able to:

  • Identify underlying assumptions of qualitative research.
  • Identify appropriate questions for qualitative research.
  • Design a plan for qualitative data collection and analysis.
  • Evaluate basic components of qualitative research.
  • Establish a reasonable set of targets related to the workshop objectives by completing an Educational Action Plan form.
