Getting Started with Implementing QI Education

Linda Headrick, MD, MS
Helen Mae Spiese Distinguished Faculty Scholar
Senior Associate Dean for Education
Professor of Medicine
University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine

Connecting what is taught in health professions curricula with real patient outcomes may seem like a pie in the sky. Despite this, educational leaders have taken the challenge seriously.  Linda Headrick, MD, a national expert in health professions education in quality improvement (QI) and patient safety, will build on ideas from her keynote presentation to have participants consider deeply what successful QI education looks like and what are the facilitators and barriers for such learning.  Participants should bring their ideas and willingness to participate in hands-on experiences.

During this workshop, participants will work in small groups to:

  • Brainstorm ideas for quality improvement learning strategies for health professions students
  • Apply what is known about the characteristics of successful quality improvement curricula.
  • Determine barriers and facilitators, including engagement with the clinical enterprise.
  • Compare and contrast the outputs of other small groups.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • List examples of QI learning strategies to consider in the curriculum.
  • Formulate strategies to implement QI learning for health professions students.
