Finding ways to fund education research in the health professions can be challenging. Only a few agencies offer grants expressly supporting medical education research, for example, NBME: Stemmler and Macy Foundation. These grants are extremely competitive and provide relatively small levels of funding. The experiences of faculty who have successfully funded their research in this field suggest that the key is to position one’s education research toward the funding that is available. This workshop brings together a panel of funded medical education researchers to share their experiences, and introduces tools for automating searches for internal and external funding for educational research.
Panel members:
Shelley Adler, PhD
Professor, Family and Community Medicine
Osher Center for Integrative Medicine
Karen Hauer, MD
Professor of Clinical Medicine
Department of Medicine
Jason Satterfield, PhD
Professor of Clinical Medicine
Department of Medicine
During this workshop, participants will:
- Hear a panel of speakers share examples of successful grant applications that funded education research
- Brainstorm new ways of formulating/framing current research questions
- Practice aligning one’s own educational research interests with hot topics in other research realms: clinical research, health care policy, social sciences, etc.
- Review available internal and external funding agencies/sources and databases
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe examples of successful pursuits of grants that supported an education research component
- Develop strategies to solicit grant funding, including formulating appealing research questions
- Access funding resources
