Educational scholarship includes not only teaching and using best practices in teaching, but also developing resources and conducting educational research. In this workshop that focuses on dissemination and publication of educational scholarly work, participants will learn where to publish their manuscripts and present their research, as well as how to critically examine educational research articles.

Advance Preparation:
Go to and choose "Registering with My NCBI" to create an account, which you will use during the workshop to set up literature search notifications.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key journals in medical education.
  • Implement a strategy to keep current with the medical education literature.
  • Evaluate and generate examples of scholarship.
  • Identify conferences, journals and sites for disseminating educational scholarship.
  • Establish a reasonable set of targets related to the workshop objectives by completing an Educational Action Plan form.

During this workshop participants will:

  • Participate in a journal fair; review and critique the major journals in medical education.
  • Set up for automatic table of contents notifications from these journals.
  • Develop an automatic search for a topic of interest.
  • Explore sites for product dissemination.
  • Apply review criteria to sample educational products.
  • Write an abstract for Really Good Stuff or RIME, 500 words.
  • Review resources for scholarship from the Academy of Medical Educators.

Could we request that participants do two things:

  1. Bring a laptop (we need to supply power cords) or let us know if they need to borrow one.
  2. Sign up for “My NCBI” if they do not already have an account. They can follow this link or go to PubMed and click on the far right to “Sign In My NCBI”
