The current definition of formative assessment broadly includes all activities that instructors and learners undertake to get information that can be used diagnostically to alter teaching and learning. This workshop will introduce participants to the purpose and benefits of conducting formative assessment. The first half of the workshop will provide information on the latest research in formative assessment through examples. The second half of the workshop will provide resources for instructors on how to implement effective formative assessment strategies into their teaching.

During the workshop the participants will:

  • Listen to a lecture that provides definitions and examples related to current research in formative assessment;
  • Participate in a small group to select formative assessments and consider how they might implement them in their current teaching.

At the end of the workshop the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose and benefits of formative assessment;
  • Identify how to incorporate formative assessment strategies into their teaching.
