Enroll
Enrollment in Pathways to Discovery signals a learner's commitment to complete a core or advanced Pathway in a given period of time (by completion of the degree or training program). For information about individual Pathway requirements, read more on the individual Pathway sites under "The 5 Pathways" tab above. For enrollment timelines, deadlines, forms, and contacts, find the program that best describes your Pathway goals and where you are on the continuum toward competency in your area.
Pathways Enrollment for 4-year Programs

Pathways Enrollment for Advanced Degrees
Pathways hosts several advanced training programs for learners who've developed the "core" skills at UCSF or other institutions. Advanced training opportunities require a commitment to additional coursework and/or projects of more breadth and depth than required by core tracks. Options include:
- MD with Distinction (4 or 5-year MD)
- UCSF/UC Hastings Masters in Law and Health (1-year independent Masters open to all UCSF students and faculty)
- Masters of Advanced Studies in Clincial and Translational Research (5-year combined MD/MAS)
- UC Berkeley Masters of Education (HPE Advanced track combined with the 1 or 2-year masters open to all UCSF advanced learners and faculty) (consult Dr. Carrie Chen)
- Masters in Global Health Sciences (1-year independent Masters open to all UCSF students)

PROF-PATH Enrollment
All PROF-PATH participants must enroll in a Pathway to Discovery or an equivalent approved by the PROF-PATH and Pathways leadership. Learners from all UCSF professional schools are encouraged to apply.

- applications for PROF-PATH fellowships are administered via the Resource Allocation Program for Trainees (RAPtr)

Learners can enter PROF-PATH in two ways:

Enrollment in IDS 140.20 - Pre-Approval for Independent Project Work
Health Professional Learners undertaking research or other projects who are enrolled in Pathways enroll in IDS 140.20 rather than research elective units.
Enrollment Requirements:
- enrollment in a Pathway to Discovery
- prior approval from the Pathway Director and mentor
Timeline:
Applications must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the start of the period for which credit is requested.
Process:
- Consult school advisors to determine how many and when to schedule weeks of independent project work
- Alert mentors who will receive an endorsement form once the request for approval is submitted
- Submit the request for approval form.
- Save the link to the application portal sent via email upon submission. Learners can consult this link to monitor when approval is received
- applicants must list specific tasks they will complete for each period requested.
- credit can be requested for as little as 2 and up to 14 weeks total credit
- applicants can request approval for up to three work periods per submission
IMPORTANT: registration via the UCSF registrar is not sufficient and credit will not be given to learners who enroll in IDS 140.20 without director and mentor approval using the process outlined above.
Residents
For residents interest in HPE, H&S, MMP, and GH, the deadline to apply for your residency program approval is February 15th. A proposal will be due on June 1st.
