Teach for UCSF Program Details

Certificate Tracks

Specific sets of UCSF Educational Skills Workshops make up the different certificate tracks.  Click to see required workshop topics listed on page two of each flyer:

Expectations

We expect participants in the Teach for UCSF certificate program to:

  • Participate actively in workshops to attain learning objectives.
  • Demonstrate aquisition of skills by completing an online skills assessment exercise during each workshop.
  • Set personal goals for applying the skills learned in their own practice setting.

Active Participation

All UCSF Educational Skills Workshops involve hands-on activities for practicing educational skills.  Participation in these activities is the basis of developing both knowledge and competence, and benefits the UCSF teaching and learning community.

Demonstration of Skills

Demonstration of skills is required for a workshop to count toward a certificate. Participants demonstrate skills by completing and submitting a skills assessment exercise at each workshop.

Setting Skills Practice Goals

At each workshop, participants build a personal Educational Action Plan to put newly acquired skills to use.

Participation

Successful progress depends on a few simple guidelines:

  • Be eligible for the program.
  • Enroll in at least one certificate program.
  • Register in advance for workshops.
  • Make progress toward completion of a certificate at a suggested pace of 2-3 workshops per year.
  • Receive recognition for certificate completion.

Eligibility

The Teach for UCSF Program is available to all current paid and volunteer clinical, basic science, and social science faculty at UCSF and affiliated institutions, as well as to future faculty such as UCSF residents, fellows, and post-docs.

Enrollment

To enroll in one or more certificate programs, submit an enrollment form online. There is no obligation involved with enrollment, but enrollment is required to obtain a certificate. Upon enrollment, participants receive a worksheet to track their progress, and links to help them find upcoming workshops.

Workshop Registration, Locations, and CME Credit

See workshop schedule for description and learning objectives for each workshop, and registration details. Certain workshops are repeated on a yearly cycle, others rotate on a two- or three-year cycle. Workshops are offered at UC San Francisco Parnassus campus and at selected affiliated teaching sites. We encourage advance registration in workshops to reduce the likelihood of a workshop cancellation due to low enrollment. There is no charge for workshops, and workshops carry CME/CE credit for eligible health professionals. Learning materials from selected workshops are available for review on the Continual Professional Learning space along with the skills-assessment forms that are used for demonstrating skills during a workshop, and tools for self-assessment in real life teaching settings.

Completion

For a list of required workshops, see the flyer for each certificate or the Teach for UCSF page on the CPL space. Requirements for a certificate should be completed at a suggested pace of 2-3 workshops each year.  Time investment can be as little as 8 hours per year. Participation in select UCSF Educational Skills Workshops after January 2009 may retroactively count towards certificate requirements. Contact us for details.

Recognition

We notify certificate awardees and their department chairs about completion twice per year, in February and August, with a letter and an invitation to an annual awards ceremony.
