Research Areas

Broadly speaking, CFE research faculty focus on several key areas. This is an ever-growing set of interest areas that evolves as we collaborate with other researchers at UCSF, regionally, nationally, and internationally. However, each faculty member has specific research interests and expertise, as described below:

Boscardin: issues of reliability and validity of performance assessments, applications of latent variable modeling to complex data, continuing medical education, health disparity and access to quality health care.

Irby: clinical teaching (identifying and evaluating the characteristics, knowledge, reasoning, and actions of distinguished clinical teachers in medicine), faculty development, and curriculum change.

O'Brien: workplace learning in relation to systems improvement, longitudinal clinical experiences, and interprofessional education and practice; evaluation of interprofessional education; qualitative research methods.

O'Sullivan: clinical education in the medical and health professions, surgical education, faculty development, critical reflection, and use of portfolios for assessment.

Teherani: professionalism, clinical assessment, clinical teaching, program evaluation, disabilities, environmental sustainability and health
